Free Willy is finally free! Well, at least in one country...

It's a childhood story that spans generations with movies like "Free Willy" and "Flipper", and a dream that most of us dreamt as kids - to swim with dolphins and whales. The fascination with these sea mammals has been exploited since the first killer whale was put into captivity in 1961 ("Wanda", as she was named, died in less than two days of captivity). Since then, nearly 150 of these animals have been captured from the wild to be entrapped in small water tanks and made to perform for paying audiences.  The orcas and dolphins entertainment is a billion dollar industry, with marine parks all...

What is going on in the Amazon forest?

It’s taken the world by storm first via social media, which forced news outlets to speak up about the issue and culminating with a war of words between political leaders on both sides of the Atlantic. This year’s Amazon fires reached a pinnacle when president Emmanuel Macron (France) tweeted that they are an “International crisis” and later called for emergency talks on the issue at the G7 summit. Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro (Brazil) saw Macron’s comments as an insult and struck back, sparking a diplomatic crisis that has done nothing to help the issue so far. But if we look...

Are all plastics bad?

The Economist shouted last week in its cover about the increasing concern about global deforestation.  On one hand we are trying to reduce the use of plastic, and on the other one trying to keep our forests alive - I am sure you can also see the conflict right there! But first, we should look a bit deeper into plastics to understand a crucial question - what are plastics made for?  And are they all harmful to the environment? Let's start with the basics. The world produces about 350 million tonnes of plastic per year (Europe has held a more stable...

Which is the only country to ban shark fin trade in the world?

For anyone who cares about marine conservation, shark fin trade has long been a serious reason for concern.  Not only because of the poor sharks that are sometimes finned alive and thrown back in the water to die, but also because these species of fish are so essential for the marine ecosystem. Every year the UN estimates that 73 million sharks are killed in our oceans (some conservationists put that number as high as 150 million!).  More than 73 million sharks are killed each year :( But why should we care about these ocean predators?  The answer is behind an intricate food chain hierarchy in the oceans...

Is plastic recycling a threat to marine life?

Since the world started to become more aware of the issues with the plastic cycle (particularly how they are discarded and take hundreds of years to decompose), there has been a drive to recycle as much as possible of the stuff. Many techniques have developed since then - some questionable due to the amount of energy they use - but nonetheless valid as long as we are left with less plastic waste in landfills, and most importantly, our oceans. One of the more recent trends which has really mushroomed this year is the production of yarn from plastic bottles.  A brilliant idea indeed when you...
